MTU "Deadeyes' Break Records To Start New Year
Hold on to your campaign hats, here we go again.
If the shattering of records by Marksmanship Training Unit "Blue" pistol team led by Capt. William W. McMillan is any indication, National Rifle Association statisticians will turn gray trying to keep their record books up-to-date.
The bull's-eye busting captain posted five new NRA individual records while shooting in the Southland Pistol Match at the San Diego Police Pistol Range last week end.
Meanwhile, the MTU "Blue" squad, composed of Capt. McMillan, TSgt. F. W. Filkins, MSgt. J. A. Fowler and MSgt. R. O. Jones, swept the matches and set two new records.
All matches were fired over the registered short national match course with the ten ring no larger than a 50-cent piece.
Shooting the .22, .38 and .45 caliber pistols, Capt. McMillan broke the grand aggregate record by 20 points. He fired a 2663x2700, knocking Army MSgt. H. L. Benner's 2643 score out of the books.
TSgt. Filkins was second with a 2615x2700 for the match.
In the .22 pistol competition, Capt. McMillan posted a 194x200 for slow fire; a 295x300 in the national match course; a "possible" 200, timed fire; and established a new record aggregate of 887x900 for the short course.
With the .38, the national pistol champion blasted the center of the target for another aggregate record, 886x900.
During the .45 caliber individual match, "Mr. Pistol" put on a one-man show, topping 140 shooters. He captured three new records: slow fire, 196x200; national match course, 297x300; and the aggregate, 890x900. The captain also shot a 199x200 in the timed fire and a 198x200 in the rapid fire competition.
This was followed by Capt. McMillan taking the NRA Building Fund Match with a total score of 1773x1800.
In team competition, the "Blue" squad fired an 1165x1200 with the .22. They posted new NRA records with the .38 (1163x1200) and the .45 caliber pistol (1152x1200).
Capt. McMillan now holds all aggregate pistol records with the exception of one, the regular .22 course, which MSgt. Benner still retains.
