Pistol Champ Shoots Today
Lt. William W. McMillan of the U.S. Marines, national pistol champion, heads an all-star lineup here today for the opening of the 21st annual Pistol Championship of Arizona.
The lanky Marine, who has practically rewritten the pistol record books in his brief but spectacular competitive career, is the defending Arizona champion. He annexed the title, with a new record score, last year at Tucson.
Among other stars in the field of more than 80 handgunners is W. T. Toney Jr., El Paseo, Tex., border patrolman, former national champion, and several times Arizona titleholder.
The matches will be fired today and Sunday at the Phoenix Rod and Gun Club range in South Mountain Park. Starting time is 8 a.m. each day.

McMillan Fires New .45 Rapid-Fire Record
Captain W. W. McMillan of the Corps' Marksmanship Training Unit at Camp Matthews has fired a new record in .45 caliber pistol rapid fire competition.
The new high of 200, or a "possible," with 13 X's, was fired in the 21st Annual Arizona State Pistol Championships held in Phoenix, April 19-20.
The MTU shooter had previously held the record score for .45 rapid fire competition, but Army SFC Ratliff topped that score a month ago with a 200 and 9 X's.
National Rifle Association statistics reveal that only twice has a "possible" of 200 been fired in this .45 caliber category.
A second straight Arizona State Pistol Championship was copped by Capt. McMillan who fired a match grand aggregate of 2634.
Master Sergeant F. W. Filkins was First Master in grand aggregate standings with a 2589.
The .22 caliber aggregate was won by Sgt. Filkins with an 882x900.
Slow fire .22 shooters were led by MSgt. R. O. Jones who fired 193x200. Second place honors went to Sgt. Filkins, 193x200 who missed first-place rating by one X.
In .22 rapid firing Capt. McMillan led shooters with another "possible" 200.
Staff Sergeant E. S. Sarver fired first in .38 caliber timed and rapid fire competition with scores of 200 and 197x200 respectively. Sgt. Sarver was third in the .38 aggregate with 863x900.
Captain McMillan won slow fire and National Match Course honors with respective scores of 190x200 and 293x300. He led grand aggregate totals with 879x900.
Forty-five caliber slow fire shooters were led by Capt. McMillan with 185x200 while TSgt. W. J. Hino was a close second with 185x200.
The .45 aggregate was won by Capt. McMillan with 874x900.
The MTU Blue Team won the .45 pistol match with 1155.
The top pistol marksmen in the meet represented Service, Police, Border Patrol, and civilian units.
An MTU spokesman described the weather in Phoenix as "hot and hotter," but the temperatures did nothing to interfere with the high scores turned in by the eight Marksmanship Unit pistoleers who competed in the two-day meet.
May 2, 3, and 4 pistol shooters will vie for honors in the California State Rifle and Pistol Championships at Camp Matthews.
Long range matches will be fired Friday, while rifle and pistol competitions will be held Saturday and Sunday.
