Pistol Team Outshoots All In Last Match
The famous Quantico Marine Pistol Team, holder of another world's record and co-holder of another world's record, today presented to Lt. Gen. Franklin A. Hart, Commandant of the Marine Corps Schools, three recently won trophies. The trophies had been presented to the team for winning all the events in the Park Police Pistol Match recently held in Washington, D. C.
The Washington Match included shooters from all over the country, with representatives being present from the Navy, Army, Police Departments, and Civilian Clubs. The Quantico team won all three events, shooting the 22, 38, and 45 caliber pistols.
The four members of the team present at the ceremony were: Captain John M. Jagoda, who tied the world's record for firing the 45 caliber pistol at the match, 2nd Lt. Thomas R. Mitchell, Chief Warrant Officer Mark Billing, and Sergeant William W. McMillan.
The trophies each representing excellence in firing of certain caliber pistols were: The Washington Times-Herald Trophy for the 22 pistol, presented by Chief of Police Raspberry; The Secretary of the Interior Trophy for the 38 pistol, presented by Mr. Oscar Chapman, and the G. S. Leoffler Trophy for 45 pistol, presented by Mr. Leoffler.
General Hart expressed his pride and congratulated the team for their outstanding records.
Captain Jagoda fired 199 out of a possible 200 to tie the world's record for the 45, and other team scores are as follows: With the 22, the team fired 1158 out of 1200, with the .38, 1129 out of 1200; and with the 45 they fired 1126 out of 1200.
The past record of the Quantico Marine Pistol Team is equally impressive. At Harrisburg, Pa., the team broke its own world's record for firing the 45 with a score of 1157 out of a possible 1200. At the South River Pistol Matches held in New Jersey, they tied the world's record for the 22 with a score of 1172 out of a possible 1200.
The trophies will be placed in the Quantico Rifle Range Theater along with other trophies won by Marine marksmen.
