A Clairemonter, Marine Corps Captain W. W. McMillan, 4540 Gila Ave., became California pistol champion for the second straight year May 3 at a Camp Matthews Competition.

He scored 2645 out of 2700. McMillan also has set three new national records and copped the .22, .38 and .45 caliber aggregates.

'Mr. Pistol' wins 2nd State Title

Capt. W. W. McMillan, Jr., the Corps' "Mr. Pistol" successfully defended his state title last weekend at the 1958 California .30 Caliber Rifle and Pistol Championship Matches with a smashing score of 2645x2700.

More than 500 civilian and military shooters entered the three-day event.

This is the second straight year the Marine "deadeye" has won the California Championship.

He set new national records and copped the .22, .38 and .45 caliber aggregate to virtually sweep the matches.

Capt. McMillan fired 199 in the .22 caliber slow fire; 893 in the .22 caliber aggregate and 198 in .45 caliber slow fire for his latest national records.

In the .30 caliber rifle matches, MSgt. Jesse Davenport, MTU, starred among the Marine masters who entered the shoot.

The veteran rifleman won the 1000 yard Wimbledon Scope Sight Match with a possible and 16Vs and on to take the "B" or service rifle divisions at 300 years rapid fire with 100/11V; the slow fire aggregate with 295/31V and the Governor's Match (grand aggregate) with 494/54V.

Other MCRD rile winners were: Sgt. Dale C. Stone, "B" Division off-hand with 100/10V; William C. Rose, MCRD team, 600 yard slow fire "B" Division with 99/14V; and Cpl. Alan M. Dapp, MTU, 600 yards slow fire "A" Division with 100/16V.

MSgt. Fred C. Filkins, MTU, won the International Shooting Fund Pistol Match with 397; MSgt. J.C. Palmer, MCRD Team, won the. 45 caliber timed fire match with 200; and MSgt. Ray E. Baumann, MCRD Team, won the .22 caliber rapid fire with 200/12X.

The Navy's Small Arms Training Unit Team, stationed at Camp Matthews, took the State Pistol Team Championship with a score of 3450x3600. Members of the team are: AO1 Thomas D. Elton, TM1 Gasper P. DeFino, HM1 David E. Myrick, and ETC Merle C. Martin.

AO1 Elton also won the .45 caliber National Match Course with 290/13X.

Championship team with the rifle was the Ft. Benning, Ga., U.S. Army "Blue" team with a 984x1000/121V.

The NRA sanctioned matches were conducted by Marines from WpnsTrngBn. and the Depot under the direction of Col. J. H. Brower.

McMillan and Nott Capture Shot Crowns

SAN DIEGO, May 4 - National Champion William McMillan of the Marines and Arthur Nott, a civilian from Santa Maria, won individual titles in the pistol and rifle divisions, respectively, in the California State championships at the Marine Training Recruiting Depot here today.

McMillan set records in the 22-caliber slow firing, 45 caliber slow firing and aggregate. The Los Angeles Police Department won the team title in pistol.

McMillan fired 199x200 in the .22 caliber slow fire; 893x900 in the .22 aggregate, and 198x200 in the .45 caliber slow fire to set the new records.

Pistol Shoot McMillan Wins

Capt. W. W. McMillan, Jr. of the Camp Matthews Marksman Training Unit won the 1958 California State Pistol Championship yesterday for the second straight year with a score of 2645 out of 2700.

More than 500 persons participated in the 1958 .30 caliber rifle and pistol championship matches which began Friday and ended yesterday. The Matches, sponsored by the California Rifle and Pistol Association, were held at Camp Matthews.

McMillan swept the matches by winning the .22, .38 and .45 caliber aggregates.

The California women's champion for 1958 with the pistol was Mrs. Margaret Culbertson of Pasadena with a score of 2452 out of 2700. The .30 caliber rifle champion is Arthur Nutt of Santa Maria. His score was 495 out of 500, slash 74 V's.

McMillan set three national records during the matches. They are the .22 caliber slow-fire with 199 out of 200, the .45 caliber slow-fire with 198 out of 200 and the .22 caliber aggregate with 893 out of 900.
