Pistol Expert Zeros In Rifle Range

A Marine major who was stationed at Camp Matthews from 1956 to 1959 returned to the scene yesterday for the dedication of the University of California at San Diego rifle range.

Maj. William W. McMillan, USMC, marked his return with a demostration of trick shooting.

McMillan, who has served with the Marines 19 years, is a former national, world and Olympic pistol champion. He won the world championship in Moscow in 1958 and the Olympic Gold Medal for pistol shooting in 1960. He is three time national champion and four times winner of the Marine Corps Lauchheimer Trophy for a comination of rifle and pistol shooting.

The ceremony on old Camp Matthews ground was attended by Dr. Ted Forbes, chairman of the department of physical education; members of his staff, members of the UCSD Rifle Club and their instructor, Charles (Pat) Patrick.

The new range designed for target lengths of 25 and 50 years, was constructed by 22 members of the rifle club. It is located on the site of the pistol range used by the Marines as weapons training center.

Patrick said the rifle club has 40 members - 10 of whom are girls. The instructor said the club is hoping to enter intercollegiate shooting competition by the end of the year.
