200 ACE PISTOL SHOOTERS TO FIRE ON POLICE RANGE

WORLD CHAMP TO VISIT CITY

'Pre-Perry' Match Features Best In Nation.

More than 200 of the nation's top pistol shooters will be in South Bend Saturday and Sunday for the South Bend Police Pistol Team's 4th annual "pre-Perry" matches.

The match, used as a warmup for the national championships Aug. 4-8 at Camp Perry, O., will feature a world's champion, two national champions and the first man ever to fire a perfect score in the national matches at Camp Perry.

Capt. William W. McMillan., USMC, world center fire champion, head the list. He won his title last year in an international meet at Moscow, Russia.

Top Marines Coming

Two other Marines, Frank O. Wright, national individual service champion, and Michael Pietroforte, national rifle champion, will also be featured.

Bill Hilden, of the U.S. Border Patrol, who last year fired the first perfect score in the history of the national matches at Camp Perry, will also compete.

Police Capt. Matt Zarembka said the Marine Corps will also be represented by 37 pistol shooters from every base in the United States. Teams will also compete from the 2nd Army regulars and 2nd Army reserves, Fort Meade, Md.; from the 20th Corps, 2nd Army; the 5th Army reserves; units from Fort Houston, Tex., and Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.; from Lackland Air Force Base, the U. S. Border Patrol and U.S. Army forces in the Pacific.

Advises Field Glasses

Zarembka said there is no admission charge and advised spectators to come equipped with field glasses or telescopes in order to get the full benefit of the expert shooting.

"This meet could be compared to the Master's Gold Tournament," Zarembka said on the impressive field.

The match will be held on the police pistol range on Portage Ave. Firing will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday and continue most of the day before resuming Sunday. Zarembka said he expects the match to be completed by 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

The course will include 270 shots in the individual comptetion, 90 with the .22 caliber, 90 center fire any caliber and 90 with the .45 caliber.

U.S. Marine Top Shooter in Pre-Perry

Capt. William W. McMillan, of the United States Marine Corps, San Diego, Calif., scored 2,644 out of a possible 2,700 points to win the grand aggregate award at the South Bend Police Dept.'s fourth annual pre-Perry matches Saturday and Sunday.

Eight shooters in the meet scored more than 2,600 points McMillan was followed by R. Jones of the USMC, 2627; Ed Hilden, U.S. Border Patrol, 2,617; Frank MacFarland, USAF, 2613, and Bill Stoltman, USAF, 2610.

The Border Patrol team won the .45 caliber team event, the Marine Corps Shooters were the best in center fire, and the Air Force team won the .22 caliber competition.

A total of 221 shooters including a team from Hawaii and an individual from Venezuela, took part in the meet. The top teams are all entered in the Perry, O., national championships on Aug.4-8.
